Tough Dog Suspension NZ
Overland Imports is the exclusive authorised New Zealand importer and distributor of Tough Dog 4WD suspension. Every shock, spring and component we sell comes direct from 4Way Suspension Products (Tough Dog Suspension, Australia) — genuine stock, full manufacturer warranty, and fitment data matched to your exact vehicle and build.
What Tough Dog suspension is
Tough Dog is an Australian suspension manufacturer built around a straightforward premise: the loads a four-wheel drive actually carries in the real world are nothing like the loads it was sprung for at the factory. A vehicle that leaves the production line tuned for an unladen commute behaves very differently once you add a canopy, a drawer system, long-range fuel, a rooftop tent and a fortnight of gear.
Their range is engineered around that gap. Shocks are built to shed heat over sustained corrugations rather than fade after twenty minutes. Springs are rated for constant load rather than occasional load. Components are designed to be serviced in the field, not replaced at a dealership. It's a philosophy that translates well to New Zealand conditions, where a single trip can move from motorway to metal road to river crossing inside an hour.
What "authorised importer" actually means for you
Suspension is one of the easier product categories to buy badly. Grey-import stock, superseded part numbers and kits assembled from a generic fitment chart all look identical in a listing photo. The difference shows up eighteen months later, when a shock fails and nobody will honour the warranty.
Buying through the authorised channel
- Genuine stock, current part numbers. Our catalogue is reconciled directly against the manufacturer's current fitment data — not a scraped parts list.
- Full manufacturer warranty, honoured in New Zealand. No shipping a failed shock back to an overseas seller at your own cost.
- Fitment matched to your vehicle and build. Cab chassis versus wagon, leaf rear versus coil rear, standard versus constant load — the distinctions that determine whether a kit works or sags.
- Advice that accounts for LVV. We'll tell you where a given lift height sits against New Zealand certification thresholds before you buy, not after.
- Local stock and local support. Held in New Zealand, shipped nationwide, backed by people you can call.
The Tough Dog range
Foam Cell shocks
Foam Cell shocks replace the pressurised nitrogen gas charge with a cellular foam sleeve inside the shock body. The practical benefit is heat management and consistency: as the shock works, the foam accommodates oil expansion without the aeration that causes conventional shocks to go soft on long corrugated sections. They're the sensible default for touring, loaded work and general four-wheel driving where you want a fit-and-forget upgrade.
40mm Adjustable shocks
The 40mm Adjustable is the tuning option. A larger bore gives greater oil volume and better heat dissipation, and external adjustment lets you dial damping to suit how the vehicle is loaded on a given trip — softer for unladen daily running, firmer when you're carrying weight or towing. Worth the step up if your vehicle's load state changes significantly through the year.

Coil and leaf springs
Springs set ride height and carrying capacity; shocks control how that movement is damped. Both need to be specified together. Tough Dog springs are offered in standard and constant-load ratings across a wide range of lift heights, so a vehicle that permanently carries a canopy and drawers can be sprung for that reality rather than riding on springs that are already at their limit before you load up.

Fitting and LVV certification
New Zealand regulates modified suspension more tightly than most markets. Some changes sit inside the Warrant of Fitness system and need nothing further; others require Low Volume Vehicle certification before the vehicle is legal on the road. The thresholds are specific, and a few widely repeated rules of thumb are wrong.
Because the rules turn on how ride height is achieved rather than simply how much lift you end up with, it's worth understanding before you order. We've set out the current position in detail on our LVV certification and suspension lift guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is Overland Imports the official Tough Dog distributor in New Zealand?
Yes. Overland Imports holds exclusive authorised importer and distributor rights for Tough Dog suspension in New Zealand, supplied direct by 4Way Suspension Products Pty Ltd in Australia.
Should I choose Foam Cell or 40mm Adjustable shocks?
Foam Cell suits most touring and general four-wheel drive use — a consistent, fade-resistant upgrade you fit and forget. The 40mm Adjustable is worth the step up if your load state varies a lot through the year, or you tow and want to firm the vehicle up for it. Our comparison guide walks through both in detail.
Do I need LVV certification for a Tough Dog lift?
It depends on how the lift is achieved, not only on the final height. Certain methods require certification regardless of how small the change is, and any body lift on a body-on-chassis four-wheel drive always requires it. Our LVV guide sets out the current thresholds, and we'd always recommend confirming your specific build with an LVV certifier before fitting.
Do you ship throughout New Zealand?
Yes. We hold stock in New Zealand and ship nationwide, to both retail customers and our authorised dealer network.
Can I get Tough Dog suspension fitted rather than supply-only?
Yes. We supply a network of authorised dealers and workshops around the country who can supply and fit. Get in touch and we'll point you to your nearest.
Is the warranty valid in New Zealand?
Yes. Because we're the authorised importer, Tough Dog's manufacturer warranty is administered locally. You deal with us, not an overseas seller.
Not sure which kit you need?
Tell us your vehicle, how it's set up and what you use it for. We'll match the right shocks and spring rates rather than guessing from a generic fitment chart.
