A suspension lift kit is one of the most worthwhile upgrades you can make to a four-wheel drive, and one of the easiest to get wrong. This guide covers what's actually in a kit, how to choose the right one for how you use your vehicle, and what New Zealand's certification rules mean for your options.

What's in a suspension lift kit

A proper kit isn't a box of taller springs. It's a matched set of components designed to work together at a specific ride height and load rating.

  • Shock absorbers — control how the suspension moves and settles. Longer travel to suit the new ride height, valved to match the spring rate.
  • Coil or leaf springs — set ride height and carrying capacity. Rated for the load the vehicle actually carries.
  • Supporting hardware — greasable shackles and pins on leaf-sprung vehicles, bump stops, U-bolts.
  • Geometry correction — castor correction, panhard rod adjustment or extended brake lines, depending on the vehicle and the height.

The matching is what matters. Fit taller springs with standard shocks and you get a vehicle that floats, tops out its shocks, and destroys them within a season. Fit heavy springs to a vehicle that never carries weight and you get a harsh, skittish ride with poor traction on rough ground.

The most common mistake

Buying for height rather than for load. Height is a by-product of choosing the correct spring rate — it isn't the goal in itself. A vehicle with a canopy, drawers, a second battery and long-range fuel needs springs rated for that constant weight. Get the rate right and appropriate ride height usually follows.

Choosing by how you use the vehicle

Touring and overlanding

Permanent weight from a canopy, drawers, water and fuel. Constant-load rated springs and shocks that resist fade over long corrugated sections. Comfort over hundreds of kilometres matters more than articulation.

Work and load carrying

Utes running tools, stock or trays. Rear springs rated for the working load, often with airbags to level under variable weight. Priority is stopping the vehicle sagging and bottoming out.

Serious off-road

Wheel travel and clearance. Longer-travel shocks, appropriate castor correction, and attention to what the extra height does to driveline and steering angles.

Towing

Tow ball weight transfers to the rear axle and lifts the nose. Rear springs matched to the drawbar load, often with airbags for fine adjustment, and damping firm enough to control the pitch.

Daily driving with occasional trips

The hardest brief. Load state changes constantly, so adjustable damping earns its cost here more than anywhere else.

Restoring a tired vehicle

Older four-wheel drives often sag from fatigued springs rather than needing a lift. New springs at standard or mildly raised rates can restore original height and ride without touching certification thresholds.

Lift height and New Zealand certification

This is where New Zealand differs from most markets, and it should shape your buying decision rather than being an afterthought.

New Zealand's Low Volume Vehicle rules are written around how ride height is changed, not simply how much lift results. Some methods require certification regardless of how small the change is — strut and spring spacers always do, and any body lift on a body-on-chassis four-wheel drive always does. Others, such as metal leaf spring blocks up to 50mm meeting specific conditions, are excluded.

Choosing shocks

Springs decide where the vehicle sits. Shocks decide how it behaves getting there. Tough Dog's range splits into two main options:

Can I fit a lift kit myself?

Mechanically competent owners fit their own kits regularly, particularly on leaf-sprung vehicles. Coil spring compression is genuinely dangerous without the right tools, and wheel alignment afterwards is not optional. If certification is involved, professional fitting also makes the process considerably smoother.

Do I need to change my tyres as well?

Not necessarily. Lift and tyre size are separate decisions. Bear in mind that going more than 5% over the manufacturer's original tyre size triggers certification requirements, and larger tyres also affect the stability calculation if the vehicle is being certified.

How long does a suspension lift take to fit?

Most workshops allow a day for a straightforward shock-and-spring package, plus alignment. Add time for supporting work such as castor correction, extended brake lines or airbag installation.
